Learn how to apply Permectrin CDS Pour-On for effective horse fly control. Follow our step-by-step guide for safe, ready-to-use protection against lice, ticks, and flies.

Quick answer

Apply Permectrin CDS Pour-On directly to your horse's coat using a ready-to-use spray or wipe-on method, following label directions for dosage and frequency. Focus on areas where flies congregate, and reapply as needed during fly season.

Why pour-on application works for fly control

Pour-on insecticides like Permectrin CDS are designed for direct application to the animal, offering a convenient alternative to sprays or wipes. The synergized formula enhances effectiveness against a broad spectrum of pests, including lice, ticks, and several fly species. Because it's ready to use, you avoid mixing and measuring, which reduces handling errors and saves time. However, pour-on products require careful application to ensure proper coverage without over-application, especially on sensitive areas.

When to use pour-on vs. other fly control methods

Pour-on insecticides are ideal for horses that are difficult to spray or for targeted application on specific areas. They are not a substitute for environmental fly control, such as premise sprays or fly traps, which address breeding sites. Use pour-on as part of an integrated fly management program, especially during peak fly season. Avoid using on horses with broken skin or during extreme heat to minimize stress.

How to apply Permectrin CDS Pour-On step by step

Read the label and check the horse: Before application, read the entire product label for specific dosage, application methods, and safety precautions. Examine your horse for any skin irritation, cuts, or signs of illness. Do not apply to broken skin or to horses that are stressed or overheated. Always confirm the horse is healthy and the label instructions match your intended use.
Gather supplies and protect yourself: Wear gloves and eye protection. Have the product, a clean cloth or sponge (if wiping), and a halter and lead rope ready. Work in a well-ventilated area, ideally outdoors or in an open barn, to avoid inhaling fumes. Personal protective equipment is essential; never apply insecticides without gloves.
Restrain the horse safely: Tie the horse securely with a quick-release knot or have an assistant hold the lead rope. Approach calmly and use a halter that fits well. Avoid applying product near the horse's face or eyes; use a cloth to apply to the face if needed. A calm, well-restrained horse reduces the risk of accidental exposure to sensitive areas.
Apply the product according to label directions: For spray application, hold the bottle 6–8 inches from the coat and spray in a sweeping motion, covering the body evenly. For wipe-on, apply to a cloth and rub against the hair direction. Pay special attention to the neck, shoulders, back, and legs where flies congregate. Avoid the eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Even coverage is key; do not oversaturate, as excess product can drip and be wasted.
Monitor and reapply as needed: Observe your horse for any adverse reactions, such as excessive salivation, agitation, or skin irritation. Reapply according to label frequency, typically every 2–4 weeks during peak fly season, or more often if heavy rain or sweating reduces efficacy. Rotate with other fly control methods to prevent resistance. Keep a record of application dates to stay on schedule and avoid overuse.
